Product Description
Hanlon Concrete (Est in 1961) manufacture and supply concrete products to the Commercial and large-scale industrial construction clients, as well as domestic home build customers and small and medium scale builders in Ireland.
Hanlon Concrete have their own fully equipped laboratory and were one of the first companies in the Country Kildare area to achieve what was then known as ISO 9002 standard of quality certification. Hanlon Concrete has consistently retained this quality certification, one which has now been superseded by the I.S.O. 9001:2002 NSAI (National Standards Authority of Ireland) Quality Management System.
The Challenge
Hanlon Concrete are very much a forward-thinking company and wished to add value to a grit by-product from the washing process in their facility in Co. Kildare. They researched numerous options to find the production methodology that would suit the characteristics of their particular material and designed and installed a manufacturing process to turn a 4-6mm grit into a manufactured sand.
Hanlon Concrete engaged the services of Trident Controls Limited to design, manufacture and commission the electrical control panels required to run Hanlon’s new equipment.
The Implementation
Trident Controls was chosen as Hanlon Concretes provider due to its proven track record in designing, manufacturing and commissioning complex electrical control panels across multiple industries.
The implementation kicked off with a thorough review of Hanlon Concretes requirements and a review of the specifications of the machinery purchased by Hanlon Concrete. Detailed specification plans were drawn up by Trident Controls Limited and agreed by Hanlon Concrete.
Trident Controls sourced the highest quality component parts for Hanlon’s electrical control panel, buying over 98% of the component parts required from Irish suppliers.
The panel was built following best in class procedures ensuring a quality end product. The control panel was tested in Trident Controls workshop to ensure no issues when the panel was shipped to Hanlon Concretes site.
The control panel was installed by Trident Controls and commissioned in July 2021 with production commencing the following month.
The Result
The crushing of a natural grit down to a useable sand is not new. The crushing of grit down to a very fine, very consistent sand (20% < 250 micron), is new and is uncommon in Ireland.
As a result of this project, Hanlon Concrete were able to negate the stockpiling of a byproduct and improve the grading of their natural sand. This has resulted in 100% reduction in stockpiling costs and the knock-on environmental costs from excavators, articulated dumpers, and other heavy plant.
Client Feedback/Quote
This project was a major investment for Hanlon Concrete, and in some ways was a leap into the unknown because nobody is doing what we wanted to do. Other companies crush grit into a coarse sand, but none are crushing it as fine, or have such an abrasive raw material. We needed someone who would work with us, and not only design the process we wanted, but build in the flexibility to adjust the process parameters to deliver an end product with multiple variables.
Trident Controls did this. They have the technical knowledge and ability to come up with a controls solution for any problem, but more importantly have the industry knowledge to understand the problems on the ground as reported by the client.
The Project Management team was highly knowledgeable and provided dedicated support throughout the project. Strong governance, clear communication and a collaborative approach ensured a successful project delivery.
